2013 Mark Scholars Award Winners 

 

The Herman F. Mark and Mark Scholars awards recognize outstanding research and leadership in Polymer Science and are sponsored by Elsevier. 

 

 

Mark Scholar Award: Rigoberto C. Advincula was recognized for his accomplishments and contributions in his mid-career advancements in the field. He is currently Professor of Macromolecular Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. His contributions include nanostructured ultrathin polymer materials, hybrid nanoparticles, and innovative surface analytical and nanopatterning methodologies. In the world of materials, he combines the ability to link structureproperty relationship with new designs and composition of macromolecules and inorganic materials from both top-bottom and bottom-up approaches. This affords a clear and sometimes serendipitous path from conception to potential applications. Most notable are his efforts to train young scientists and engineers with the research environment he has created to give them a taste of an innovative materials discovery process. He is currently Editor for Reactive and Functional Polymers and on the editorial advisory board member to a number of journals.

 

Mark Young Scholar Award: Rachel K. O’Reilly, the Professor of Polymer Science and EPSRC career acceleration fellow at the University of Warwick in the UK, received the 2013 Mark Young Scholar Award. Professor O’Reilly was recognized as an emerging talent in polymer chemistry who is highly regarded for her creativity, productivity and contribution to education. She is perhaps best known for her work in the area of precision polymer synthesis and self-assembly with a specific focus on catalytic and responsive nanoreactors. She has won a number of prestigious young investigator awards including the IUPAC Young Polymer Scientist Wward and the Royal Society of Chemistry Hickinbottom Award in 2012.
