Preprints via MIRA are no longer available (10/2013)

Download Graphical Abstracts and POLY Workshop Reports

As the Division of Polymer Chemistry eliminated in 2013 the Polymer Preprints previously required for oral and poster presentations at National ACS Meetings, POLY now provides its POLY members and affiliate members with a compilation off all graphical abstracts that fall within the POLY programming for each specific meeting.

Download Graphical Abstracts or POLY Workshop Reports

The Graphical Abstract File:

  • Is downloadable to many electronic devices, ipads, smartphones, computers
  • Is organized chronologically by symposium/session, and each session can be quickly linked to via the table of contents
  • Is a great tool for organizing your meeting experience and for having immediate (portable) access during the meeting to abstracts and locations of presentations
  • Individual presentations can be bookmarked

If you need your Polymer Division Membership number, contact service@acs.org  or call 1-800-333-9511 or for additional assistance contact the POLY Business Office at kathyl@vt.edu  or 540-231-3029.

Submitting ACS POLY Graphical Abstracts

A traditional abstract includes title, authors, affiliations, abstract text and key figure. There is a word limit to the abstract: total characters for title & body is 2100. Submit an abstract on-line through MAPS. A detailed set of instructions is provided.

This content fits within the current ACS submission system and avoids pre-publication issues that were a major concern for our members.  The submission of an abstract that contains a TOC (table of content)-like figure is the new requirement for paper submission to POLY symposia at all National ACS meetings.

You may also call the POLY Business Office at 540-231-3029 for further assistance.

Polymer Preprint Change to Graphical Abstract

Starting with the Spring 2013 ACS meeting in New Orleans, the new submission requirement of an abstract that contains a TOC-like figure was implemented.  The decision was made over a period of time, as detailed below.  The Division will assemble and distribute all POLY abstracts for the meeting to its members in electronic format.

Spring Newsletter 2012
ACS Polymer Preprints have a long and important history within the POLY Division and have served the Division well over the years.  However, like many things, the methods by which scientific research is published have changed dramatically over the last decade.  Due to the advent of electronic publication, “Preprints” are often published more slowly than peer-reviewed manuscripts.  Publication in certain journals has also been disallowed due to the prepublication of data in Polymer Preprints.  In addition, it takes much effort for symposium participants to write the preprints and for symposium organizers to edit them.  For these and many other reasons, the POLY Executive Committee has been reviewing the value of Polymer Preprints to the Division, and serious consideration is being given to the replacement of the preprint format with a graphical abstract (a traditional abstract with one “TOC-like” figure).  Because Polymer Preprints have been an important POLY service/benefit, the POLY Executive Committee wishes to make our members aware of the possible change and potential elimination of the preprint format.  POLY members can send their comments to: preprints@polyacs.net.  During the Fall ACS meeting in Philadelphia, this item will be discussed at the Annual Business Meeting, and the POLY Executive Committee will hold a vote on the issue.   We thank POLY members in advance for their thoughtful consideration of this item.

September 2012

Over the past several months, there have been several announcements that the POLY Executive Committee was considering major changes, including the elimination of Polymer Preprints.

This item was initially announced to the membership in the spring newsletter and comments from members were solicited.  At the Fall ACS meeting in Philadelphia, this item was discussed at the semi-annual board meeting and the annual business meeting, which was open to POLY members.  Given the discussion at this meeting and the email responses collected over the past several months, the conclusion is that Polymer Preprints will be replaced by a graphical abstract (a traditional abstract with one “Table of Contents (TOC)-like” figure.  Specifically, this abstract can be up to 150 words and must include a TOC-like figure.  This content fits within the current ACS submission system and avoids pre-publication issues that were a major concern for our members.  The submission of an abstract that contains a TOC-like figure [GA, Graphical Abstract] will be the new requirement for paper submission to POLY symposia at all National ACS meetings.  The Executive Committee took this action after serious consideration and in anticipation of the necessary approval of Bylaw changes by the membership which will be voted on this Fall.  All of this will be done within the PACS system when the author is uploading their abstract.

Starting with the Spring 2013 ACS meeting in New Orleans, this new submission requirement will be implemented.  Basically, this change is effective immediately.  Therefore, please take this new requirement into consideration as you plan your submission for the New Orleans meeting.  The Division plans to assemble and distribute all POLY abstracts for the meeting to its members in electronic format.  It is the feeling of the executive committee that this new, electronic abstract file will be of significant value to the membership.  As this new benefit is rolled-out, we welcome your comments on its value and improvement.  POLY members can send their comments to: preprints@polyacs.net .  We thank POLY members in advance for their thoughtful consideration of this item.
