THE PAUL J. FLORY POLYMER EDUCATION AWARD

Purpose: To recognize, encourage, and stimulate outstanding achievements by an individual or team in promoting undergraduate and/or graduate polymer education.

 

The Flory Award commemorates the achievements of the late Paul Flory, a Nobel Prize recipient who was a chemist at Stanford University.  It was created to recognize, encourage, and stimulate outstanding achievements by an individual in promoting undergraduate or graduate polymer education.

 

Nature: The award consists of a plaque, a $3000 honorarium, and up to $2000 in travel support. The award is usually presented biennially in even-numbered years at the Spring meeting of the Polymer Chemistry Division. The recipient or recipients are expected to present award addresses at a symposium organized in their honor. Reasonable travel expenses to the meeting are paid in addition to the honorarium.

 

Establishment and Support: The award was established in 1981 and is administered and sponsored by the Polymer Chemistry Division. The Rohm and Haas Company sponsored the award through 2009. Albemarle Corporation is currently sponsoring the award (since 2012).

Rules for Eligibility: A nominee must be a member or affiliate of the ACS Division of Polymer Chemistry at the time of nomination. The award shall be granted to an individual or team for significant contributions in furthering polymer education. The award shall be granted to an individual or team without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, or sexual orientation.

 

Nomination Procedure:   All submission and review of nominations are handled electronically. Please complete this application form and include it as the first page of the nomination package. To complete the package please include a nomination letter that highlights the impact of the nominee’s work in the specific award area (max 2 pages), the nominee’s curriculum vitae (max 2 pages, tailored to the award), and a complete list of scholarly works relevant to the award (e.g., publications, patents, books, other scholarly works). The evaluation of award  packages will be coordinated by POLY Awards Co-chairs, Kenneth Carter (University of Massachusetts) and Marc A. Hillmyer (University of Minnesota).  

 

The nomination and its accompanying material for the 2020 award must be received no later than July 1, 2019
