Invitation & General Information
This symposium will focus on the role of metal ions, complexes and clusters in macromolecular systems. The polymeric materials can be either natural, or synthetic organic, or synthetic inorganic. During recent years the scope of this field has widened significantly into directions of supramolecular bio, organic and inorganic chemistry. New insights have been developed in the role of the macromolecule on material properties such as catalysis, non-linear optics, electron transfer, and in other wide ranging technologies including secondary battery components, fuel cells, sensors, toxic material recovery, fiber optic amplifiers and medical devices.
The goal of the symposium is to bring together polymer chemists and technologists, biochemists and coordination chemists. It is hoped that such a mix of scientists will lead to many contributions for further progress in the interdisciplinary research field during the 21st century.
The first symposium was held in Beijing in 1985. The series of conferences have been successfully held every two years. The MMC-8 was held at Waseda University in Tokyo in 1999. This year during August 19-23, the MMC-9 symposium will be held at Polytechnic University¹s Brooklyn Campus where the first American polymer academic education and research programs were initiated by the late Professor Herman F. Mark in 1942. We are planning to have one afternoon cruising around Manhattan Island and also several social gatherings. This conference will be an excellent opportunity to get together with MMC colleagues, renew friendships, and meet newcomers from all over the world. We sincerely hope that the participants will enjoy the atmosphere in this exciting city, the "Big Apple". We look forward to meeting you in Brooklyn soon.

Abstracts
All authors (Paper and Poster Presenters) are requested to submit a one-page abstract of their contribution in electronic form and one hard-copy form before July 15, 2001. The abstracts will be reproduced exactly as submitted in the Book of Abstracts, which will be available at the symposium. Electronic copy can be emailed to lesiar@vt.edu.
The abstract should include the title of the paper (in bold letters, NOT in capitals) followed by the name(s) of the author(s) and affiliation(s), underlining the corresponding author. This is followed by the main text, acknowledgements, and a short list of relevant references. The number of graphs is limited to one. The recommended font is Times Roman, with the title in 13 pt, the main text in 11 pt Times Roman font, and the super- and subscripts in 10 pt. as much as possible.

Poster Session
Posters will be on display on August 21, 22 and 23 with poster sessions on these afternoons. Material for mounting will be provided. Poster should include a title, authors, research institution, short introduction, summary of results, and conclusion.
A limited number of posters will be selected for oral presentation; the presenting author will be informed before August 1, 2001. A poster abstract should be submitted no later than July 15, 2001 to the Polymer Division Business Office. Please follow the instructions under the Abstracts Section of this brochure.
Accommodations
We have reserved 75 rooms at the New York Marriott Brooklyn, just 5 minutes on foot from Polytechnic¹s Dibner Library, the conference site, from August 19 through August 22, 2001. There will also be dormatory rooms available at a reduced rate. Please contact the Division of Polymer Chemistry for more accommodation details.

Registration
The registration fee is $450 for Members of the Division of Polymer Chemistry and $500 for Non-Members ($150 Student Members, $200 Student Non-Members). There is a $150 fee for a Non-Participating Guest that may accompany you. Written cancellation or registration after May 1, 2001, will cost an additional $50. The registration fee will cover the organization of the conference, the book of abstracts, the welcome reception, social hours, and refreshments during the conference. An excursion program will be offered to participants and accompanied persons.
