Regional Meetings Committee Reports

Regional Meetings W. T. Ford, T. J. Pacansky
The Division of Polymer Chemistry (POLY) of the ACS wants to promote polymer chemistry at regional meetings and is willing to provide help if the general chair or the program chair requests it. From experience at ACS national meetings, the division has a network of people who know how to organize good symposia. POLY will help identify people in the host or nearby local sections to organize polymer sessions and will provide up to $500 to support a well-planned regional meeting symposium. In turn POLY would like the opportunity to advertise its programs and recruit members at a table next to the room where the polymer chemistry sessions are held.
The criteria for POLY support are
1) There must be a full day symposium devoted to polymer chemistry.
2) The program should include one or more invited speakers.
3) To apply for support, the Program Chair or symposium organizer must send (a) a copy of the technical program to the
POLY Committee on Polymer Programs at ACS Regional Meetings (currently Warren Ford and Tom Pacansky) and (b) a budget showing how the funds will be used to defray registration fees and travel costs of invited speakers.
John Sophos of the ACS Meetings Department provides lists of the general chairs and program chairs of the regional meetings, and we send an offer to support polymer programs by email. During 2002 only the Great Lakes and Central regional meetings have polymer programs that qualify for support. The other five regional meetings either decided early not to have a polymer program or could not find a volunteer to organize a symposium.

As previously discussed, we have expanded this committee to include members from as many regions as possible, to serve as local contacts with the regional meeting organizes as well as the regional steering committees. This will increase our presence with the regional groups and better assure success. The main problem has been in the past to identify those who could be effective within their regions. The assistance of the Board members is still sought to identify members to represent the Northwest, Southwest and Western regions.
The present representatives are:

We will try to establish some kind of permanent relationship with the Regional Steering Committees, where they are agreeable, in order to "be in at the conception" of the meetings. This should permit the organization of meaningful symposia and tutorials.
Alan English reported, that the Coatings Tutorial at MARM, was a success. The emphasis on education, for those for whom the regional meetings may be their only chance to be exposed to an in-depth discussion of a focused area of technology, needs to be a prime objective in our efforts to serve the needs of a major portion of our membership. .
