SUBJECT:  Nomenclature Committee's Report

DATE:     25 August 1996

     The Committee continues to promote polymer-nomenclature
recommendations, in particular, those of the IUPAC Commission on
Macromolecular Nomenclature.

     Three Committee members (Bob Fox, Val Metanomski,
and Bill Work) attended the meeting of the IUPAC Commission on
Macromolecular Nomenclature in Seoul, Korea, on July 31-August 3, 1996,
and participated in the review of the various drafts of terminology
and nomenclature recommendations.

     The documents that are in the final
stages of preparation for publication in PURE AND APPLIED CHEMISTRY
deal with (a) glossary of basic terms in polymer science,
(b) source-based nomenclature for non-linear macromolecules and
macromolecular assemblies, and (c) definitions of terms relating to
degradation, aging, and chemical transformations of polymers.

     Other documents that are close to completion are: (a) definitions of

terms relating to polymer liquid crystals, (b) definitions of
terms relating to non-ultimate properties of polymers, and
(c) updated edition of nomenclature of regular single-strand organic
polymers.

    The Committee published "Macromolecular Nomenclature Note No. 11"
in the August 1996 issue of POLYMER PREPRINTS.  This was a
guest contribution by Edward S. Wilks of duPont on
graphical representation and nomenclature of hyperbranched
polymers.  In the same issue, a list of valid IUPAC recommendations
on macromolecular terminology and nomenclature was reprinted.

    A report on the Committee's activities during the
past year was submitted to the ACS Committee on Nomenclature.

    Due to a conflict with another IUPAC nomenclature-related
meeting in Europe, the Committee did not meet in Orlando.
