THE POLY FELLOWS PROGRAM

Awardees

 

Purpose:  To recognize excellence in all ways that POLY members advance our field of polymer science, either through scientific accomplishments, service to the profession, or both.

 

Establishment and Support:  This award was established by the Division of Polymer Chemistry in 2009, with inaugural recipients in 2010.    The award is administered and sponsored by POLY.

  

Rules for Eligibility:

The selection of individuals as POLY Fellows will be based on nominations of POLY members by POLY members.  Furthermore, it is appreciated that POLY members have diverse contributions and may focus their efforts either on scientific accomplishments or service to the profession, or both.

Nomination Procedure: 

Nomination packages will be due to the Fellows Committee by the deadline of November 30 of each year.

Introduction of THE POLY FELLOWS PROGRAM (2009)

 

       One action of the Division at the Salt Lake City (Spring 2009) meeting was the establishment of a new program to name Fellows of the Division of Polymer Chemistry.  We are excited about this opportunity to recognize outstanding achievements and contributions to polymer science and the profession.   

        

      The number of new Fellows selected each year from the nominations to the Committee will equal no more than 0.1% of the current POLY membership.  To inaugurate the Fellows program, a group of distinguished past recipients of POLY awards will be inducted as founding Fellows at the Spring 2010 ACS meeting.   Following this initial phase, Fellows will be inducted at each Spring National ACS meeting.

Purpose: To recognize outstanding achievements in and contributions to polymer science and the profession.

Eligibility: Nominees for POLY Fellows must be current members of POLY and be nominated by a POLY member and seconded by at least one and no more than three other POLY members.

Selection Criteria: Selection from among the eligible nominees will be based on demonstrated achievements in and contributions to polymer science and the profession. The most outstanding nominees will have both achievements in and contributions to both science and to the profession. POLY respects the personal and professional diversity of its members and appreciates that some nominees will have either achievements in or contributions to either science or the profession that are so exceptional as to warrant recognition as a POLY Fellow.

• Achievements are typically demonstrated by the impact of successful accomplishments
• Contributions are typically demonstrated by enabling or causing a successful accomplishment
• Polymer science in this context in intended to include basic and applied research, technology development, and engineering
• The profession in this context is intended to include education, public policy, technical management, and leadership in professional organizations

Selection Committee: The POLY Fellows Committee will be composed of the most recent three Past Chairs of the Division, chaired by the third Past Chair.

Nominators: In a given year any current member of POLY may choose to make one nomination and may not second any other nomination.

Due Date: Nominations will be due to the Fellows Committee on November 30 of each year. The primary nominator is responsible for submitting a complete nomination package including the form, requested supporting materials, nomination letter, and all seconding letters.

Renomination: Unsuccessful nominations will be held for consideration for one additional year. Nominations may be revised by original primary nominator or replaced with a new nomination.

Selection: The number of new Fellows selected from nominations to the Committee in a given year will equal to no more than 0.1% of the current POLY membership.

Initial Implementation: In order to assure that all members of POLY have the opportunity to be considered for Fellow without unreasonable and unnecessary delay, and in order to recognize those who have already been evaluated by POLY through nominations and selections, current POLY members who were past recipients of the following POLY awards will be inducted as founding Fellows:

Carl Marvel Award in Creative Polymer Chemistry
Industrial Polymer Science Award
Division of Polymer Chemistry Distinguished Service Award
Mark Senior Scholar Award
Mark Scholar Award
Mark Young Scholar Award

Future recipients of these awards who are POLY members will also be inducted as Fellows.
